Ii is a municipality of some 10,000 residents at the mouth of the Iijoki river in North Ostrobothnia, bordered by Oulu, Pudasjärvi, Ranua and Simo. Kuivaniemi was merged into Ii in 2007, and the municipality's building stock ranges from the centuries-old riverside houses of Ii's Old Hamina quarter all the way to the post-war residential areas of Asemakylä in Kuivaniemi and the small houses of Niittyrinne. A large share of Ii's detached houses, terraced houses and blocks of flats were built between 1920 and 1994, when asbestos was widely used in pipe insulation, vinyl tiles, tile adhesive mortars, façade panels and roofing. In a property completed before the 1994 ban, asbestos is likely to be present, and the law requires it to be surveyed in connection with renovation or demolition.

Because Ii lies outside our actual survey area, we serve the people of Ii with an asbestos sample sent to us by post. You take the material sample yourself and send it to us, and we analyse it for 39,90 € plus VAT with a JEOL SEM-EDS electron microscope in accordance with the ISO 22262-1 standard. You get a reliable laboratory result before the renovation begins.

Ii: when to take an asbestos sample

Ii is a municipality of some 10,000 residents at the mouth of the Iijoki river in North Ostrobothnia, bordered by Oulu, Pudasjärvi, Ranua and Simo. Kuivaniemi was merged into Ii in 2007, and the municipality's building stock ranges from the centuries-old riverside houses of Ii's Old Hamina quarter all the way to the post-war residential areas of Asemakylä in Kuivaniemi and the small houses of Niittyrinne. That is why, in local properties completed before 1994, it is worth confirming whether a material contains asbestos before anything is opened up, sanded down or demolished. A mail-in asbestos sample suits the situation where the suspicion falls on one clearly identified material and you want a reliable laboratory result before the renovation goes any further.

Ii: which materials to check before renovating

A large share of Ii's detached houses, terraced houses and blocks of flats were built between 1920 and 1994, when asbestos was widely used in pipe insulation, vinyl tiles, tile adhesive mortars, façade panels and roofing. Take the sample from the exact material the renovation touches: an old vinyl floor, the adhesive behind a tile, pipe insulation, a filler, a facade panel or a roofing material. Asbestos cannot be identified reliably by eye, so a laboratory test is the only dependable way to tell an ordinary building material from one that contains asbestos.

Ii: asbestos sampling by post

Ii lies outside the area we cover with on-site surveys, so we serve the town with a mail-in asbestos sample instead. You take a small material sample following our instructions, post it to the laboratory and receive the result by email. The price is 39,90 € + VAT per sample. The analysis is carried out with a JEOL SEM-EDS electron microscope in accordance with the ISO 22262-1 standard, so you get a clear statement on whether the material examined contains asbestos.
