Kurikka is the second-largest town in South Ostrobothnia, with a population of around 19,500 and the largest land area of any municipality in the region. The town has three main built-up areas — the Kurikka town centre, Jurva and Jalasjärvi; Jurva was merged into Kurikka in 2009 and Jalasjärvi in 2016 — and around them spreads a network of thriving villages in the middle of the open Ostrobothnian plains. Neighbouring municipalities include Ilmajoki, Seinäjoki, Kauhajoki and Teuva. The building stock of Kurikka and its built-up areas is a rich and varied body of old architectural heritage, and a large share of the detached houses, terraced houses and industrial buildings completed before 1994 may contain asbestos. Between 1920 and 1994 asbestos was commonly used in floor tiles and their adhesives, in pipe insulation, in wall and ceiling boards, and in fillers and jointing mortars, among many other materials. Because Kurikka lies outside our actual survey area, we serve it with a mail-in asbestos sample (39,90 € plus VAT). The sample is reliably analysed with a JEOL SEM-EDS electron microscope in accordance with the ISO 22262-1 standard before a renovation or demolition work begins.
Kurikka: when to take an asbestos sample
Kurikka is the second-largest town in South Ostrobothnia, with a population of around 19,500 and the largest land area of any municipality in the region. The town has three main built-up areas — the Kurikka town centre, Jurva and Jalasjärvi; Jurva was merged into Kurikka in 2009 and Jalasjärvi in 2016 — and around them spreads a network of thriving villages in the middle of the open Ostrobothnian plains. That is why, in local properties completed before 1994, it is worth confirming whether a material contains asbestos before anything is opened up, sanded down or demolished. A mail-in asbestos sample suits the situation where the suspicion falls on one clearly identified material and you want a reliable laboratory result before the renovation goes any further.
Kurikka: which materials to check before renovating
Between 1920 and 1994 asbestos was commonly used in floor tiles and their adhesives, in pipe insulation, in wall and ceiling boards, and in fillers and jointing mortars, among many other materials. Take the sample from the exact material the renovation touches: an old vinyl floor, the adhesive behind a tile, pipe insulation, a filler, a facade panel or a roofing material. Asbestos cannot be identified reliably by eye, so a laboratory test is the only dependable way to tell an ordinary building material from one that contains asbestos.
Kurikka: asbestos sampling by post
Kurikka lies outside the area we cover with on-site surveys, so we serve the town with a mail-in asbestos sample instead. You take a small material sample following our instructions, post it to the laboratory and receive the result by email. The price is 39,90 € + VAT per sample. The analysis is carried out with a JEOL SEM-EDS electron microscope in accordance with the ISO 22262-1 standard, so you get a clear statement on whether the material examined contains asbestos.
